Careeers #1
Me with
Shun-ichi Amari and
some other information geometry
experts, at the University of Michigan in August 2004. Tendered as
evidence that I would be one of the tallest information geometers in
the world, but for (a) talent and (b) desire.
Great
Moments in Science #1
Every venue at Rich Shiffrin's 2005 Annual Summer
Interdisciplinary
Conference (ASIC) was makeshift. But using the "musculation gym" for
the poster session was more makeshift than most.
It pretty quickly
became crowded, hot and humid, so Rich made the executive decision to
move the poster session to the out-of-season ski-resort hotel carpark.
A great moment in cognitive science ensued, as other hotel guests,
mostly returning from a long day's hiking in the French Alps, thought
they had stumbled on an ad-hoc post-modern absurdist art display.
An
elderly couple offered me ten Euro for my poster, but I talked them
down to five.
Child
Wrangling #1
A stand-off with Mitchell at Santa Monica, July 2005.
I wanted to play
football. He wanted to push the concrete roller into the sea.
We have about
3,254 stand-offs like this per day. Unusually, my view prevailed this
time.
(As a rule, I like nothing better than to push 300-ton concrete objects
into large bodies of
water).
Alternative
Careers #2
An album poster, prepared by my PhD students Matt Dry
and Jason
Macpherson, released to coincide with hosting the 2005 Australasian
Mathematical Psychology conference. Whether by accident or design, the
Spinal Tap analogy works quite well. Simon Dennis (bass) is often
described as luke warm water, Dan Navarro (lead guitar) worked
summers in the finest chapeau shop in Whyalla, and I've always
been uncomfortable if the Universe becomes too yielding.
A testimonial to my influence shaping young minds.
